History
Maryland's agricultural-college roots
Maryland Agricultural College, the university's predecessor, was chartered in 1856 and opened in 1859. The university's history acknowledges that its original site came from a slaveholding farmer's plantation on ancestral Piscataway land.
Maryland completed the 1951 season unbeaten and defeated Tennessee in the subsequent Sugar Bowl. The university's history distinguishes that victory from the major polls' national-title voting, which occurred before the bowl.
Maryland won all ten regular-season games in 1953 and finished atop the national polls. Jim Tatum earned national coaching honors as the Terrapins also shared the ACC championship.
The Class of 1933 raised money for a bronze Testudo sculpture as its graduation gift. Students helped fund it by holding their prom on campus instead of at a Washington hotel.
