McKay played offensive line at Wakefield High School for coach Brandon Kelley. He played guard during his first two high-school seasons before moving to tackle as a junior and senior, and he was credited with 57 knockdown blocks as a senior. Rivals ranked him the No. 32 recruit in North Carolina and No. 32 offensive guard nationally, while 247Sports ranked him No. 29 in the state and No. 39 offensive guard nationally.

College Career
McKay redshirted in 2019 while appearing in three games on special teams. He earned his first career start against UConn in 2022 and started the final 10 games of that season at right tackle. In 2023, he first started at right guard against Clemson and remained the starter there for the rest of the season. NC State credited him with 58 pancake blocks in 2022 and recognized him as one of its highest-graded offensive linemen.

McKay shared NC State's 2022 Jim Ritcher Award as the team's most valuable offensive lineman and received a National Football Foundation University Scholar-Athlete Award. He was an Academic All-ACC selection in 2022 and 2023, a five-time ACC Academic Honor Roll honoree, and a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy in both 2022 and 2023.
