I wanted to create a new set of useful resources for MyFootballToolbox.com that fantasy football players could easily download, print, or keep open while preparing for a fantasy football draft.

The idea was to organize current NFL fantasy football information in two different ways: by NFL team and by fantasy football position.

Rather than manually creating dozens of PDFs, I decided this would be a good project to build using Codex. The goal was not simply to ask Codex to make a few PDF files for me. I wanted to develop a repeatable system that could gather the information, organize it consistently, generate the PDFs, and eventually make it relatively easy to update everything as NFL rosters and depth charts change throughout the season.

The first part of the project was creating a PDF for each of the 32 NFL teams. These team sheets concentrate on the positions that are most important for fantasy football:

Quarterback (QB)
Running Back (RB)
Wide Receiver (WR)
Tight End (TE)
Kicker (K)
Defense (DEF)

Instead of looking through an entire NFL roster, someone preparing for fantasy football can quickly open a team's PDF and see the players who are most likely to matter from a fantasy football perspective.

I also wanted the same information organized from the opposite direction. Sometimes I don't care about seeing an entire team's roster. Instead, I may want to compare quarterbacks, running backs, or wide receivers from across the NFL.

For that reason, the system also creates six position-based PDF files: one each for QB, RB, WR, TE, K, and DEF.

That means the first complete run of the system produced 38 PDF files: 32 team files plus 6 position files.

One interesting part of this project was watching how much work Codex could accomplish within one of its usage windows. Codex was back in what it described as a 5-hour window — whatever that actually means in terms of processing or usage.

During that window, we developed the system, worked through the data and formatting issues, and generated all 38 PDF resources.

After everything was completed, Codex showed that I had only 8% remaining before the next reset at 3:22 PM.

So apparently developing the system and generating all of those files used about 92% of that particular Codex usage window.

More importantly, at the end of the project I didn't just have 38 PDFs. I had the beginning of a reusable system for producing and updating fantasy football resources for MyFootballToolbox.com.

That is much more useful than manually creating a collection of files one time, because NFL rosters, depth charts, injuries, and player roles are constantly changing throughout the preseason and regular season.

The next challenge is making the information inside these PDFs as useful and accurate as possible, while also making the entire system easy to rerun whenever the underlying NFL data changes.

One PDF for Each of the 32 NFL Teams

One of the main parts of this project was creating a separate fantasy football information sheet for every NFL team. The example shown here is the sheet created for the Los Angeles Chargers.

The goal of each team PDF is to take a large amount of roster and fantasy football information and condense it into a single page that is easy to scan. Instead of looking through a full NFL roster, depth chart, news articles, and several fantasy football websites, I wanted the most useful information for fantasy football grouped together in one place.

Each team sheet is divided into the major fantasy football positions: Quarterback, Running Back, Wide Receiver, Tight End, and Kicker. The players are then listed in the approximate order that I believe is most relevant for fantasy football purposes.

For example, the Chargers sheet immediately shows Justin Herbert as the projected starting quarterback, followed by Trey Lance as the likely backup. At running back, Omarion Hampton is shown as the projected lead back, with the other backs organized underneath him based on their expected roles.

The wide receiver section provides another example of why I wanted more than a traditional depth chart. The receivers are organized by fantasy target order, which is intended to give a quick indication of how important each player may be to the offense rather than simply listing everyone by roster position.

Each player entry can include several pieces of information, such as:

Jersey number
Player name
Projected fantasy role
NFL experience
Draft year and draft position
Undrafted free agent information when applicable
Short notes about the player's expected role
Special status indicators such as rookie, watch, or new team

I also added a What Changed? section near the bottom of the sheet. This is one of the areas I think can make these PDFs especially useful. A depth chart tells you who is currently on the roster, but it doesn't necessarily explain what happened during the offseason that may affect fantasy football.

For the Chargers, this section includes things such as coaching changes, additions to the backfield, changes in the tight end room, injuries, and other roster developments that could affect how players are used during the season.

There is also a How to Read This Sheet section explaining that the fantasy order is an editorial projection based on the information available when the PDF was generated. This is important because these sheets are not intended to represent an official NFL depth chart.

They are designed specifically as a fantasy football reference.

The other 31 team PDFs use the same general layout. That consistency was an important part of building the system. Once you understand how to read the Chargers sheet, you can open another team's PDF and immediately know where to find the quarterback situation, running back hierarchy, receiver order, tight ends, kicker, and important offseason changes.

The result is essentially a set of 32 one-page fantasy football team summaries that can be used while researching players, preparing rankings, or working through a fantasy football draft.

Position Rankings Make It Easy to Compare Players Across the NFL

In addition to creating one fantasy football PDF for each of the 32 NFL teams, I also wanted a second way to look at the same information: by position.

This is especially useful when preparing for a fantasy football draft. Instead of looking at one team at a time, I can quickly compare players from across the entire NFL at a specific position.

The system currently creates separate ranking sheets for:

Quarterback (QB)
Running Back (RB)
Wide Receiver (WR)
Tight End (TE)
Kicker (K)
Defense (DEF)

The example shown here is the Top 32 Quarterbacks sheet. It is designed as a one-page reference that makes it easy to compare the quarterbacks who are most relevant for a typical one-quarterback fantasy football league.

Each player includes several pieces of information that I think are useful when making draft decisions:

Rank – my current fantasy football ranking for the player
Team – the player's current NFL team
Bye Week – useful when building a complete fantasy roster
OVR – the player's consensus overall ranking
Range – the range between the highest and lowest expert rankings
Band – my broader grouping of players with similar draft value
Role / Context – a quick indication of whether the player is a projected starter, backup, rookie, or another situation worth noting

I also divided the rankings into broader draft bands. Instead of pretending that there is a huge difference between every individual ranking spot, these bands help show groups of players that I view as having relatively similar fantasy draft value.

For example, the top quarterbacks can fall into an Elite group, followed by projected starters, later QB1 options, and then QB2 options. This gives me another way to think about the position during a draft rather than focusing only on an exact numerical ranking.

The Range column is also particularly interesting. A player with a very narrow expert ranking range is generally being evaluated fairly consistently, while a very wide range can indicate much more disagreement about that player.

That disagreement can sometimes be just as useful as the ranking itself. It can help identify players who may be undervalued, overvalued, or simply much harder to project.

The quarterback sheet also includes reminders about how the rankings should be used. For example, these particular rankings are intended for a one-quarterback redraft league and are not designed for Superflex leagues, where quarterback values would be substantially different.

The same basic system is used for the other position PDFs. Each sheet is formatted consistently so that once I understand how to read the quarterback rankings, I can quickly move to running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, kickers, or defenses without having to learn a different layout.

Between the 32 individual team sheets and the 6 position ranking sheets, I now have two different ways to research the same NFL fantasy football player pool: I can start with a team and see how its offense is structured, or start with a position and compare players across the entire league.
