What is an NFL franchise?

An NFL franchise is a member club authorized to operate a team in the league. The franchise includes the right to field an NFL team in its approved home territory, subject to league rules and shared obligations.

Although people often use franchise and team interchangeably, the franchise is the continuing league membership and business organization. Players, coaches, executives, stadium arrangements, and even the home city can change while that membership continues.
