What is the difference between the AFC and NFC?

The American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC) are the NFL's two conferences. Each has 16 teams arranged into East, North, South, and West divisions. Both conferences use the same playing rules.

The distinction mainly organizes schedules, standings, and the playoffs. AFC teams compete for the AFC championship, NFC teams compete for the NFC championship, and those conference champions meet in the Super Bowl.
