Why does the NFL use conferences and divisions?

Conferences and divisions give the NFL a consistent structure for schedules, standings, and the postseason. Divisions create recurring regional and traditional rivalries because each team plays its three division opponents at home and away every season.

Division champions receive playoff places, while conference standings and tiebreakers help determine the remaining qualifiers and seeding. The AFC and NFC then conduct separate playoff brackets, producing the two conference champions that meet in the Super Bowl.
