What does a wide receiver do?

A wide receiver runs pass routes to get open and catch throws from the quarterback.

Receivers may align outside or in the slot, block on running plays, and occasionally carry the ball. Speed, route technique, hands, awareness, and the ability to gain yards after a catch are central parts of the position.
