How are NFL bye weeks assigned?

Bye weeks are assigned as part of the NFL's full schedule-building process. Every team receives one week without a regular-season game during the 18-week schedule.

The league considers travel, stadium conflicts, international games, broadcast requirements, team requests, and the placement of short-rest games. A bye is therefore not chosen through one simple public formula, and teams can receive their open week at different points in the season.
