How a Fantasy Football Draft Works

A fantasy football draft distributes available NFL players among the league's managers. Once a player is selected, no other team can draft that player. The draft continues until every roster is filled.

Draft formats

In a snake draft, managers select in an order that reverses each round. In an auction or salary-cap draft, every manager can bid on any nominated player while working within a budget.

Building a roster

You must fill the required starting positions and bench spots. Strong drafts balance immediate starters, positional depth, and players with upside. League size, scoring, and lineup rules determine how early positions should be addressed.

Before and during the draft

Prepare rankings or tiers for the correct scoring format. During the draft, track which positions are becoming scarce and what your roster still needs. Remain flexible when unexpected players fall.

The draft establishes the opening roster, but waivers and trades remain important throughout the season.
