How Team Defenses Score Fantasy Points

A fantasy team defense, or D/ST, scores from the combined results of an NFL defense and usually its special teams. Common categories include sacks, interceptions, fumble recoveries, safeties, blocked kicks, and touchdowns.

Points allowed

Many leagues begin D/ST with a point total that decreases as the opponent scores. Some also consider yards allowed. The exact brackets can make a major difference in weekly results.

Turnovers and touchdowns

Takeaways provide points and can lead to defensive touchdowns, creating large scoring swings. Return touchdowns may count through the special-teams portion of D/ST, while offensive fumble-return rules vary.

Review the league settings before choosing a defense. Matchup quality, pass rush, opponent turnovers, injuries, and expected game flow can all affect weekly opportunity.
