When Should I Draft a Kicker and Defense?

In leagues that require a kicker and team defense, both positions are usually drafted in the final rounds. Their weekly scoring is difficult to predict, and useful replacements often remain available after the draft.

Prioritize scarce starters first

Early and middle rounds are generally better used on running backs, wide receivers, quarterbacks, and tight ends whose roles can create lasting value. Drafting a defense early can cost you a bench player with greater upside.

Select for early usefulness

For D/ST, consider the opening matchups, pass rush, and opponent turnover risk. For kicker, consider accuracy, range, and an offense likely to create scoring opportunities.

Some leagues do not use these positions. Always fill the required lineup, but avoid treating kicker or defense as permanently fixed when streaming options are available.
