High School
At Sheldon High School, Herbert became an all-state quarterback and a consensus three-star prospect after overcoming a junior-year injury.
Herbert's junior football season ended after two games because of a leg injury. As a senior, he threw for 3,130 yards and 37 touchdowns, ran for 543 yards and 10 scores, and led Sheldon to a 10-2 record and the Class 6A state semifinals.
He was named Southwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year and shared first-team Class 6A all-state honors. ESPN, Rivals and 247Sports rated him as a three-star prospect before he chose Oregon.

College Career
Herbert made 42 starts at Oregon and finished among the program's career leaders while guiding the Ducks to a Pac-12 title.
He became Oregon's first true freshman starting quarterback since 1983 and developed into a four-year starter. Across 43 games and 42 starts, he completed a program-record 827 passes and finished with 10,541 passing yards, 95 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions.
As a senior in 2019, Herbert led Oregon to the Pac-12 championship and a 28-27 Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin. He scored three rushing touchdowns in the Rose Bowl and was named the game's Offensive MVP.
