He earned all-state and all-conference honors at running back, wide receiver and defensive back during his career, scored 31 touchdowns as a senior and helped Williamsburg reach the playoffs in four straight seasons. He also competed on a state-champion track team.

Wetjen played first at Iowa Western Community College and then became an elite return specialist at Iowa.
He produced 952 all-purpose yards for Iowa Western in 2021 before joining the Hawkeyes. At Iowa he returned 54 punts for 954 yards and four touchdowns and 56 kickoffs for 1,538 yards and two touchdowns, while also contributing as a receiver and runner.
