What are air yards?

Air yards describe how far downfield a pass travels relative to the line of scrimmage. Completed air yards apply to caught passes; intended air yards can also include incomplete attempts.

A pass aimed 18 yards downfield can contribute intended air yards even if it is not caught, while producing no receiving yards. Check which version a table uses. A pass caught behind the line can have negative air yards.
