What is a completion?

A completion is a successful forward pass caught by an eligible offensive player. The receiver must satisfy NFL catch requirements, including control, the required inbounds contact, and completing the catch process.

The passer receives a completion and the receiver receives a reception. A completed pass can gain yards, gain nothing, or lose yards. For example, a receiver can catch a screen behind the line of scrimmage and be tackled there for a loss.
