What is a defensive interception?

A defensive interception is a legal catch of the opponent's forward pass by a defender. It changes possession and gives the interceptor credit for the takeaway.

If the defender advances afterward, return yards are tracked separately; reaching the opponent's end zone produces an interception-return touchdown. A tipped pass can still be intercepted, while merely knocking a pass to the ground does not create an interception.
