What is a forced fumble?

A forced fumble is recorded when a defensive player causes a ball carrier or other opponent to fumble. A strip by a tackler is a common example.

The forced-fumble credit is separate from the fumble recovery. One defender may force the ball loose while a teammate, the offense, or nobody in bounds recovers it. A forced fumble can therefore be recorded even when the defense does not gain possession.
