What is a fumble recovery?

A fumble recovery occurs when a player gains possession of a live ball that was lost in a fumble. Either team can recover it.

A defensive recovery normally creates a turnover, while an offensive recovery allows the offense to retain possession subject to the play and down rules. The player credited with the recovery is not necessarily the player who forced the fumble.
