What is a long run?

The long-run field, often labeled LNG or Long, normally shows a player's largest gain on one rushing play in the selected game, season, or career.

If a player's carries gain 4, 27, and 9 yards, the longest run is 27 yards. This is a single-play maximum rather than an average or total. In commentary, a long run may simply mean a sizable gain without a fixed cutoff.
