What is a passing attempt?

A passing attempt counts a forward pass recorded in the statistics. Completions, incompletions, and interceptions thrown are included; sacks are recorded separately.

For example, a passer with 20 completions, nine other incomplete throws, and one interception has 30 attempts. A penalty can change which statistics survive a play, so the official box score may not match a simple count of every throw seen on television.
