What is a quarterback scramble?

A quarterback scramble is an unplanned run after a passing play begins. It differs from a designed quarterback run, such as a draw or sneak.

For example, a quarterback can drop back, find the receivers covered, and run through an opening for 12 yards. That gain is recorded as rushing yardage. Moving around behind the line before throwing a pass does not by itself produce a rushing attempt.
