What is a rushing attempt?

A rushing attempt counts a rushing play credited to a ball carrier. It is often called a carry and can end in a gain, no gain, or a loss.

Running backs are not the only players with carries: quarterbacks and receivers can run the ball too. For example, a receiver taking a handoff on a reverse receives rushing statistics. Catching a forward pass and then running is recorded in the receiving category instead.
