What is a rushing first down?

A rushing first down records a first down earned through a running play. The necessary gain depends on the distance to the line to gain, not a fixed number of yards on every play.

A 2-yard run on third-and-1 earns a first down; the same run on first-and-10 does not. First downs awarded because of penalties are tracked separately from those earned by rushing or passing.
