What is a tackle?

A tackle credits a defender's role in stopping a ball carrier. Statistical tables may separate solo tackles and assists or combine them into total tackles.

Always read the column label before comparing players. For example, six solo tackles and three assists commonly appear as nine combined tackles. A tackle total alone does not show whether those stops occurred near the line of scrimmage or after substantial gains.
