What is a target in NFL statistics?

A target counts a pass directed at an intended receiver. It measures receiving opportunity rather than a successful catch.

For example, a receiver credited with eight targets and five receptions caught five of the eight passes directed his way. Throwaways and some unusual plays do not have an identifiable target, and charting rules can differ by provider. Use one source consistently when comparing target totals.
