What is adjusted yards per attempt?

Adjusted yards per attempt, or AY/A, is calculated as (passing yards + 20 × passing touchdowns − 45 × interceptions thrown) ÷ passing attempts. It rewards touchdowns and penalizes interceptions while keeping the result on a yards-per-attempt scale.

For example, 240 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception on 30 attempts yield 235 ÷ 30, or about 7.83 AY/A. AY/A excludes sacks; adjusted net yards per attempt (ANY/A) includes sack losses and adds sacks to the denominator. Neither measure is defined when its denominator is zero.
