What is an interception thrown?

An interception thrown occurs when a defensive player legally catches a forward pass before it reaches the ground. In the passing record, the thrower is charged with an interception and a pass attempt, but no completion.

The number records the outcome rather than assigning responsibility for the mistake. A tipped ball can become an interception even when a receiver could have caught it. Interception-return yardage is a separate defensive statistic.
