UNDERSTAND THE NUMBERS
Contract value is only the headline
APY
Average annual value divides the stated contract value across its contract years. It is useful for comparing deals, but it is not necessarily what a player earns in one season.
Guaranteed money
Guaranteed compensation is the portion protected under the contract's reported terms. Guarantee structures and trigger dates can differ substantially.
Cap charge
A season's cap number can combine base salary and allocated bonuses. It may be very different from both APY and cash paid that year.
